Reflections: Portraits of the Elderly as They Once Were

I’ve always loved this photoset, it has so many stories just through pictures.

It always pains me to see the elderly being dismissed, ignored or mistreated just because people don’t stop to think about the lives they’ve lead.

For anyone who didn’t see it, let me tell you.

The Doctor’s a time traveler. He brought Vincent Van Gogh (who was severely depressed and lost hope in his ability and himself) to the future, to a museum where they are celebrating his art.

I don’t know if any of you are artists (drawing, writing, whatever), but being a writer, this scene moved me to tears. You’re your own worst critic, and feel like your stuff is complete shit sometimes…maybe even to the level of despair like Van Gogh. But imagine someone brought you to a world where people love and appreciate your art. Or it means something so special to them. The thought of it is overwhelming.

I just about died

Just looking at this makes me want to sob oh god so many feelings

I just started sobbing.

This episode
I don’t know what to say that others haven’t already said.

Well maybe one little thing
I remember when it first aired, during the credits of the original BBC One airing (dunno about the later showings) they had a number for “those suffering from issues such as those found in this episode” to a suicide hotline.
I dunno, I’ve just always appreciated it that they did that. Even if only because I can honestly say that while it is one of my top two of NuWho, sometimes I can’t watch it; it, especially the end, is a bit triggering for me. I don’t really have a better word for how it affects me. Even a lot of the little moments of Van Gogh being ridiculed totally dismissed because of seeming “insanity” brings me back to dark places I’d rather not remember.

So, uh, yeah, I really appreciate that the BBC did that.
That all said, probably one of the more life-affirming episodes, and that means a lot considering this is Doctor Who we’re talking about; Doctor Who is one of the few sci-fi shows that remains stubbornly OPTIMISTIC about humanity.
Also, I know people complain about Murray Gold a lot, but I’ll jut say, when one of the Series Four soundtrack tracks pops up on my playlist, I still automatically think it’s from one of my movie soundtracks, especially the tracks from this episode.

Yes I also appreciated the hell out of BBC’s decision to air support numbers, because of course a show about a man who committed suicide would be triggering for people struggling with depression.

Not just for what still happened to Vincent, but also for all the triggery things already mentioned.. For me, the part that cuts me to the quick was when the Doctor says “in my experience there’s always hope,” and everyone blogged the hell out of that gif. But no one ever included Vincent’s anguished response: “then your experience is INCOMPLETE.”

So yeah, the BBC did the right fucking thing by including suicide hotlines.
